-36- Waham

Standard

Noun. From Arabic.

“The random cravings that pregnant women experience”

waham

In searching for this phrase (and the above photo), every image I came up with was of pregnant women either eating chocolate or gherkins. Apparently, no other weird cravings exist…

Anyway, waham is a nice, succinct way of saying that a pregnant woman has reached that stage where she has started to eat all the almonds in your house, but only if they are now covered in baking soda and strawberry jam. There is, according to this book on folklore in the UAE, a belief that if a woman who is undergoing waham does not get the food she so unusually craves, her child will be born with a birthmark resembling that of what she did not receive.

Not even one of the weirdest tales I’ve heard so far this year…
