-98- Myötähäpeä

Standard

Noun. From Finnish.

“When you feel embarrassed for another person”

picard-facepalm

Some people translate this as ‘mutual shame’ but I like to think that it has more of an embarrassment sense to it. It’s the feeling you get when you’re watching an inappropriate movie with your (grand)parents, and you get that sudden ‘I want the ground to swallow me up’ feeling.

For those who, like myself, find Finnish an absolute nightmare to pronounce, myötähäpeä sounds something like ‘moo-er-ta-ha-pay-ah’
