Think any number of Homer Simpson creations, such as his ‘Kidney’ that was, in essence, a whistle glued to a beer can. France also has a chain of shops known as ‘Monsieur Bricolage’ which is a little like B&Q, and there is also the phrase ‘Monsieur le bricolage,’ which I’m assuming is some relation to a handyman (or one who thinks they are handy but perhaps aren’t so much…)
